Spring Blooms presented by Wild Birds Unlimited is back at Newfields, and no matter the weather, our spring traditions start with a bloom. Now through Mother’s Day, more than 50,000 new bulbs including daffodils, hyacinths, tulips and more will emerge to blanket every corner of The Garden.
“I am delighted to invite guests to spend their spring at Newfields,” said Jonathan Wright, The Ruth Lilly Director of The Garden and Fairbanks Park. “There’s something for everyone this time of year. I encourage guests to come early and often to see The Garden come to life. Presented by Wild Birds Unlimited, this exhibition will highlight springtime traditions from across the world. These stories, activities and new perspectives provide the perfect companion for a day of exploring at Newfields.”
The Beer Garden at Garden Terrace will serve up the perfect setting to grab a bite to eat, sip on a drink and enjoy Indy’s most unique patio. The menu features fresh, garden-inspired favorites, crafted by Newfields’ Director of Culinary Arts, Chef Patrick Russ, that are perfect for lunch or a casual afternoon snack. Savor rotating flatbreads, hearty sandwiches, vibrant salads and our giant Bavarian pretzel made for sharing. Wash it down with a great lineup of beers from Germany, Belgium and right here in Indianapolis, curated by Certified Cicerone Lindsay Jo Whirley. Keep an eye out for the Culinary Arts food truck this season, popping up in the months ahead with new chef-driven specials throughout the season and a few surprises you won’t find anywhere else. The Beer Garden will open weather permitting, mid-April and will ramp up offerings as the weather improves. Check discovernewfields.org and social media for real time Beer Garden updates.
Celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 25 at Newfields’ Earth Day Extravaganza. Spend the day with family and friends, admiring peak blooms in The Garden, then head inside the IMA Galleries to experience our remarkable works of art and discover all that the museum has to offer. Newfields will host a variety of Earth Day programs throughout April, including a guided walk through The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park on April 22 with the Indiana Audubon Society, led by Newfields’ own Wes Homoya.
The latest days of spring will bring spectacular scenes of flowering trees and shrubs, including favorites like serviceberry (Amelanchier sp., also known as shadbush or Junebush), eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) and flowering dogwood (Cornus florida).
“The beauty of the blooms, the singing of the birds – it all brings us so much joy!” said Wild Birds Unlimited CEO, Jim Carpenter. “Wild Birds Unlimited is very pleased to partner with Newfields to present this joyous seasonal celebration, not only to Newfields Members and guests, but also to the birds and critters who call Indianapolis home.”
The grande finale will come on Mother’s Day Weekend. Treat the mothers in your life to a gorgeous stroll through The Garden and a moment of quiet reflection in the IMA Galleries.
