The Indy Dance Council is excited to debut the trailer and line-up for this year’s Indy Dance Film Fest at Kan-Kan Cinema in Indianapolis. This evening of short dance films from across the U.S. showcases the country’s vast array of talented filmmakers and performers with a passion for dance.
Indy Dance Film Fest celebrates the intersection of dance and cinema with both local and national artists. This year’s line-up of nine films includes:
● “Am I Still Dreaming?” by Jonathan Bryan (Indianapolis, IN): A young woman trapped in the repetitiveness of her office job only finds joy in the art of dance in this film exploring the quiet tension between passion and pressure.
● “Ancestral Shadows” by Wilma Casal (New York City, NY): The reunion of three sisters leads to a journey through the shadows of their ancestors.
● “The Elusive Home” by Rediet Negede Lewi (Ithaca, NY): Based on the words of three African poets and accentuated by an original score, this interpretive dance film uses multiple layers of sensory media to portray the anguish associated with transnational existence.
● “ENOUGH” by Amanda Parsons Browning (Fishers, IN): A screen dance that traces the visceral act of breaking loose from imposed and unwanted boundaries, labels, and perceptions on an unfolding journey towards healing.
● “FANTASMA” by Mikey Slavich (Albuquerque, NM): An experimental performance weaving together movement, fashion, music, and landscape into a sweeping cinematic experience, this work honors the enduring artistry and cultural legacy of New Mexico.
● “Lowelyfe Episode 1: The Only Way Out Is Through” by Quilan Cue Arnold (Union City, NJ): Agui Luz, survivor of the Tower of Aeries collapse, seeks refuge from his survivor’s guilt at a mysterious clinic — only to find himself caught in a deeper test, one that may reveal a calling he’s spent years trying to escape.
● “Opting to Be Pulled” by Emilie Sylvestri (Portland, ME): Developed from a longer stage ballet inspired by the 1983 large-scale painting, Pas De Deux by Alex Katz, this piece translates the static image of five couples into five distinct but related duets.
● “Rock On” by Meghan McGillicuddy and Sam Pittman (Indianapolis, IN): A bold collision of grit and glamour fusing Bob Fosse’s sleek cabaret vocabulary with the raw, industrial edge of Rob Zombie, resulting is a visual ride that swings between smoky nightclub allure and full-throttle rock show.
● “Unlikely Pairings” by Luis Hernandez, Grace Mullins, and Sophie Wang (Indianapolis, IN): A daring and soulful fusion of hip-hop and ballet set against a minimalist urban backdrop at North Mass Boulder, the piece follows two dancers as they confront, mirror, and ultimately move with each other.
