This June and July, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir (ICC) will host its annual Summer Music Camp and Music Education Summit at the ICC Performing Arts Center. Camp provides a week of fun for children entering grades 1-8, while the Summit provides hands-on professional development for music educators. Both will be filled with high quality music instruction for which the ICC is known.

Summer Music Campers will learn a variety of songs that celebrate classics from the organization’s 40-year history, plus a newly commissioned piece that campers will premiere. In addition to singing and mastering lyrics, campers will also receive lessons in rhythm and music theory, plus a chance to try instruments like drums and xylophones. Campers will conclude their time with a public concert for family and friends to share the songs they have learned.

The ICC plans to welcome over 100 children to each session of camp. With scholarships and discounts available (including through the Access Pass program), organizers envision a camp that is accessible for kids who might otherwise not be able to participate in a camp this summer.

“Families are always amazed with what just a few days of choral instruction does for their child,” shares Joshua Pedde, Executive Artistic Director of the ICC. “Our camp is a display of what the ICC is all about— which is fun and impactful music for all children.”

The ICC will also host its newly revamped summer experience for music educators, the ICC Music Education Summit. This gathering of professionals from all choral backgrounds will provide hands-on sessions and choir observations as participants gain takeaways that they can bring back to their own music teaching settings. Participants can expect sessions with expert insight from the choir professionals at the ICC, and from two guest clinicians: Darren Dailey from the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus and Teresa Fowler, music educator and owner of Choir is Family.

“Camp and Summit are important times for the ICC to open its doors to educators and to new singers and families. It’s the ideal way to get acquainted with the ICC and see what makes this organization such a shining example of choral music excellence,” explains Lauren Southard, Manager of Outreach and Choir Programs at the ICC.
