Families are invited to honor and celebrate freedom at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis during its annual Juneteenth Jamboree on Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. In the spirit of inclusivity and education, admission for the day is completely free, though advance reservations are required for non-members. Ticket registration opens at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, at childrensmuseum.org/juneteenth or by calling 317-334-4000.
The Juneteenth Jamboree offers engaging, family-friendly programming that reflects the historical and cultural significance of Juneteenth—the holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. The museum collaborates with local community partners to share authentic stories, host interactive experiences, and provide learning opportunities that celebrate Black heritage and resilience.
“We look forward to celebrating with our community as we honor the rich history and significance of Juneteenth,” said Jennifer Pace Robinson, president and CEO of The Children’s Museum. “For more than three decades now, the museum has been dedicated to commemorating this monumental day of freedom and equality. Our goal is to inspire children to embrace diverse cultures, offer a space for celebration, and showcase a powerful legacy of resilience.”
This year’s festivities will feature performances by the Griot Drum Ensemble, T.G. Danz, and the JBJ Collective, along with Juneteenth Story Time led by local storyteller Portia Jackson. Young artists can also collaborate with one of the museum’s newest visiting artists to create meaningful works inspired by the holiday.
The ever-popular Community Marketplace returns, offering visitors access to local resources, small business vendors, and community organizations. Guests can also take part in the “Murals for Justice” activity, contributing their voices and creativity to a collective art installation.
Additional highlights include a meet-and-greet with a former Miss Indy Juneteenth and the chance to make personalized “Sashes of Affirmations.” Visitors are encouraged to explore the stunning Miss Indy Juneteenth dress display, on view from May 23 through June 30.
The Children’s Museum will also participate in the eighth annual Indy Juneteenth Celebration on June 21 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, where families can engage in fun activities including a pedal car race obstacle course and an interactive museum activation booth.
