This fall, Madison, Indiana’s scenic riverfront and historic downtown will once again transform into an open-air gallery during the 54th Annual Madison Chautauqua Festival of Art. Scheduled for September 27–28, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, the beloved festival invites visitors to experience one of the Midwest’s premier celebrations of creativity and community.
Nationally recognized as a destination, Madison has twice been named “Best Small Town in the Midwest” by USA Today’s 10Best. Its welcoming charm, walkable historic district, and cultural vibrancy make it the perfect backdrop for the juried arts and crafts festival, which draws more than 200 talented artists from across the country. Visitors can browse and purchase original works ranging from fine art and photography to handcrafted woodwork, textiles, ceramics, and jewelry—each piece carefully juried for quality and authenticity.
The Madison Chautauqua’s reputation continues to grow. In 2025, Sunshine Artist Magazine ranked the festival among the Top 200 nationwide, climbing to #33 in the Fine Art & Design category from #86 the previous year. What makes this recognition stand out is that the rankings are voted on by the artists themselves, underscoring the event’s high caliber and welcoming crowds.
Beyond the art, the festival offers a full weekend of entertainment and activities for all ages. Attendees can enjoy live music throughout the riverfront and downtown, savor local and regional flavors at the Riverfront Food Fest, and take part in the colorful Annual Chalk Walk, where community members of all ages bring Elm Street to life with vibrant sidewalk art. Family-friendly programming and children’s activity zones add to the festive atmosphere.
To make the experience even easier, a Madison Chautauqua Shuttle will run from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. both days, with parking available at Madison Consolidated High School (743 Clifty Dr.). A $5 round-trip pass is valid for the entire weekend and drops riders conveniently at the Broadway and 1st Street festival entrance. Visitors are reminded that while service animals are welcome, pets are not permitted within the festival area due to crowd size and safety considerations.
Held in Downtown Madison, a designated National Historic Landmark District, the Madison Chautauqua Festival of Art offers a unique blend of small-town charm, nationally recognized talent, and picturesque fall scenery. With stunning river views, local shops and eateries, and a welcoming community spirit, Madison is the perfect fall getaway destination.
