Impressionism Across Generations: The Pissarro Family Legacy offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience the artistic evolution of one of the most influential families in modern art. Now on view at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, the exhibition brings together seven remarkable works from the museum’s collection created by three generations of the celebrated Pissarro family: Camille, Lucien, and Georges Pissarro.
Open through January 10, 2027, the exhibition explores how creativity, collaboration, and mutual respect shaped the family’s artistic journey and helped influence the direction of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century art.
At the center of the exhibition is Camille Pissarro, widely regarded as the “father” of the Impressionist movement. Known for his landscapes and scenes of everyday life, Camille’s influence extended far beyond his own canvases. His sons, Lucien Pissarro and Georges Pissarro, each developed distinct artistic styles while continuing the family’s tradition of experimentation and innovation.
“We are excited to share these important paintings from the IMA’s collection and offer visitors the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the creative exchanges of the Pissarro family,” said Curatorial Assistant Sadie Arft. “Camille is well known as the ‘father’ of the Impressionist movement, and his sons Lucien and Georges each experimented with pioneering painting techniques, with Lucien even influencing his father to adopt Neo-Impressionism. The family’s story of intergenerational support is one in which we can all find inspiration.”
The exhibition highlights how artistic dialogue within the family pushed each generation toward new creative breakthroughs. Lucien’s embrace of Neo-Impressionism and innovative painting methods encouraged Camille to explore new techniques later in his career, while Georges developed his own artistic identity through both painting and printmaking.
Beyond the paintings themselves, visitors can deepen their understanding of the Pissarro family’s work through the museum’s digital catalogue, Paintings by the Pissarro Family: A Technical Catalogue. Available online, the catalogue provides conservation imaging and technical analysis that reveal the materials, methods, and artistic processes used in the creation of each piece. These behind-the-scenes insights offer a fascinating look at how the artists approached composition, color, and technique across generations.
Impressionism Across Generations: The Pissarro Family Legacy not only celebrates the enduring impact of the Pissarro family on modern art, but also demonstrates how collaboration and shared creativity can inspire innovation across generations. Through these seven carefully selected works, visitors can witness the artistic conversations that shaped both the family’s legacy and the broader evolution of Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism.
Admission to the exhibition is included with General Admission and free for museum members. Advance tickets are encouraged, though not required.
