The Indianapolis Children’s Choir (ICC) not only has a packed 40th Anniversary Season of concerts this year, but also many accessible opportunities coming this fall for children who want to experience their musical expertise. This October, the organization is planning two fall events for the community: a Fall Break Music Camp and a Day of Song.
“These programs are a way for us to live out our vision of ensuring singing is valued and supported for all children in the community,” shares Joshua Pedde, Executive Artistic Director of the ICC. “We really strive to have things available at all levels of commitment for families. If they can’t commit to a weekly choir rehearsal, they can stop by for a program that’s as short as week camp or a day program so their child can still experience the music education that we’re known for.”
October’s Day of Song is a one-day event on Saturday, October 11 with different music classes happening for various age groups, plus a public open house for the community to visit the choir’s Performing Arts Center. Classes will be available for children in preschool – 8th grade throughout the day and registration is required, while the public can simply drop in for a visit any time from 9:30 am – 4:00 pm to see the choir’s facilities and meet directors. Open choir auditions are also being held that day should children want to join a more advanced weekly choir.
The ICC’s Fall Break Music Camp is a week-long experience from October 13-16 for children in grades 1-7 that also takes place at the ICC’s Performing Arts Center. The camp offers exposure to part-singing, instruments, music games, plus fall fun and crafts. The week concludes with a Halloween-themed performance where campers will present all they’ve learned for their families and friends.
The goal for the ICC remains to help create meaningful choral music experience for children in the area, regardless of income level and time commitment.
“Financial assistance is always available for all of our programming too,” explains Pedde. “Plus, we have been a part of the Access Pass program that offers discounts for families who qualify for government assistance programs, which makes these types of short programs even more accessible.”
