Indianapolis Ballet will launch its 2026–27 season with Close Encounters, an electrifying collection of seven new works that places audiences just feet away from the dancers.

Running Oct. 1–4 at The District Theatre in downtown Indianapolis, the production moves ballet from the traditional proscenium stage into an intimate black-box setting. The format gives patrons an unusually close view of the strength, precision and artistry required of professional dancers while highlighting ballet’s continued evolution as a contemporary art form.

Close Encounters will feature original choreography created by members of Indianapolis Ballet’s artistic team, company artists and guest choreographers. The seven featured choreographers represent a variety of perspectives and career stages: guest choreographer Matthew Neenan; Rehearsal Director Francis Veyette; Company Soloist William Robinson; Company Artists Abigail Einterz and Logan O’Neal; Company Apprentice Allison Smith; and Professional Trainee Claire Wright.

Together, their works will offer audiences a diverse program built around movement, emotion and dynamic storytelling. The venue’s close quarters will allow spectators to observe details that can be difficult to see in a larger theater—from the dancers’ athleticism and musicality to the subtle expressions that shape each performance.

Each performance will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the choreographers, included with the price of admission. The talkbacks will give guests an opportunity to learn more about the creative process, the inspiration behind the works and the collaboration required to bring new choreography to the stage.

The production serves as the contemporary opening statement for a milestone season at Indianapolis Ballet. The company’s 2026–27 schedule will feature expansive collaborations with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, including Cinderella, The Nutcracker and Ballets Russes. The latter will include the world premiere of Matthew Neenan’s The Firebird. The season will also bring the return of audience favorites including To the Point(e).

With its adventurous choreography and immersive presentation, Close Encounters sets the tone for the season ahead while offering both longtime ballet patrons and newcomers an accessible way to experience dance at its most immediate.
