Indianapolis Ballet’s Board of Directors has named Don Steffy as the organization’s first Executive Director. The search committee, led by Board President Geovani Bonilla, made the unanimous recommendation to the Board after a three-month extensive search.

Steffy’s background as an executive director, coupled with a deep passion for promoting community-based arts programs, will help to further advance the organization’s mission. “We are very excited to welcome Don as our new Executive Director,” says Bonilla. “He brings with him a great combination of administrative leadership experience, enthusiasm, and a lifelong passion for dance. We feel very lucky to have found him and look forward to a successful and invigorating future with him at the helm.”

As of April 5th, Steffy will develop and manage all funding functions for the company, school of ballet, and productions, as well as managing and overseeing all financial, administrative, facility, and human resource functions.

“It’s a great honor for me to join Indianapolis Ballet as their first Executive Director,” says Steffy. “I also have the good fortune to work alongside a brilliant force like Founding Artistic Director Victoria Lyras at such a pivotal time in the company’s history. This combination, along with a strong administrative team, a dedicated Board, and generous donors will truly enable us to take the Ballet’s vision to the next level.”

Steffy joins Indianapolis Ballet after 13 years as the Executive Director of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, where he helped secure the organization’s largest grant from Lilly Endowment, created the organization’s first-ever Legacy Society, and developed several outreach initiatives. Prior, he served as Executive Director of the Pike Performing Arts Center in Indianapolis, IN. Under his leadership for 11 years, the Center successfully served the community through an array of academic, community, and professional performances. In July 2021, he will serve as the President of the Rotary Club of Indianapolis.

A classically trained dancer, Steffy is no stranger to the dance world. Performing in ballet companies in the United States and Europe, he danced the works of notable choreographers such as George Balanchine, Robert Joffrey, and many more. He also performed in the original Broadway cast of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and the full Broadway run of the Tony Award-winning revival of On Your Toes. Prior to arriving in Indianapolis, he held the post of Artistic Director for the Montgomery Ballet in Alabama.

Steffy will oversee the remainder of Indianapolis Ballet’s 2020-21 Season, which includes Grace to Grandeur, April 16-18 and The Sleeping Beauty, June 11th -13th. “We have every confidence that Don will bring a firm commitment to excellence, the hallmark of our organization,” says Victoria Lyras, Founding Artistic Director. “As we begin to emerge from this pandemic, Indianapolis Ballet continues to move forward as a vibrant and important cultural institution, and with our new Executive Director in place, the organization can excel for the benefit of our community for years to come.”
