Immerse Yourself in THE LUME at Newfields

Joey Amato | July 28, 2021

It’s sad to say I haven’t been to Newfields in well over two years, however that will change going forward as I was invited to preview their newest and possibly most exciting exhibition in recent memory, called THE LUME. The exhibition, created by Australian-based Grande Experiences is an immersive, multi-sensory experience highlighting the works of Vincent van Gogh.

Guests are quickly transported into 30,000 square feet of art, featuring Van Gogh’s most iconic paintings. The exhibition, which opened on July 27, combines cutting-edge technology with floor to ceiling projections of some of the most famous paintings in the world. As the largest exhibition experience in Newfields’ 138-year history, guests can admire breathtaking masterpieces like never before.

THE LUME features nearly 150 state-of-the-art digital projectors that can transform two-dimensional paintings into a three-dimensional world that guests can explore through all their senses. The exhibition featured in THE LUME will move far beyond the static nature of traditional art exhibitions. THE LUME has 60 minutes of digital content. About 40 minutes of the exhibition is Van Gogh content, featuring 30 of his paintings, while 20 minutes of the exhibition are short stories, called featurettes, with content created by up-and-coming digital artists and all of which are inspired by the work of Van Gogh.

Guests are encouraged to wander throughout the space, taking in the experience from every angle as the show plays simultaneously in all of the digital galleries. THE LUME Café is now open so guests can grab a drink or snack while enjoying the experience.

The incredible exhibition ends in a gallery where guests can view original paintings by Van Gogh, Cezanne and Gauguin from the IMA Collection.
