One of Indiana’s most beloved sports stories will return to the big screen this fall when Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts celebrates the 40th anniversary of “Hoosiers.”
A special screening will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, at the Payne & Mencias Palladium in Carmel. The event will include an in-person conversation with four key figures from the film, an autograph session and a rare opportunity to see one of its most recognizable props.
Released in November 1986, “Hoosiers” tells the story of a small-town Indiana basketball team that defies expectations on its journey to the state championship. The screenplay was inspired by Milan High School’s improbable victory in the 1954 boys’ state basketball tournament—an achievement that remains one of the most celebrated moments in Indiana sports history.
The film received Academy Award nominations for Jerry Goldsmith’s original score and Dennis Hopper’s supporting performance. It was later selected for preservation in the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry and is widely regarded as one of the greatest sports films ever made.
Filmmakers and Players Reunite
Following the screening, sports talk radio personality JMV of 93.5 and 107.5 The Fan will lead a live discussion with screenwriter Angelo Pizzo, director David Anspaugh and actors Brad Long and Maris Valainis.
Long portrayed Hickory Huskers team captain Buddy Walker, whose confrontations with Coach Norman Dale create some of the film’s early tension. Valainis played Jimmy Chitwood, the gifted but initially reluctant player who delivers the championship-winning shot in the film’s unforgettable finale.
The guests will share stories about the making of the movie, its enduring connection to Indiana and the influence it continues to have four decades after its theatrical release. An autograph session will follow the discussion.
Fans can also see the small, cherry-red 1939 Chevrolet school bus that transported the fictional Hickory Huskers to their games. One of the film’s central props, the bus will be parked outside the Palladium for photographs throughout the event.
An Enduring Indiana Story
Although “Hoosiers” is rooted in basketball, its themes extend far beyond the court. The film explores redemption, teamwork, perseverance and the pride of a community rallying around its young players.
Its depiction of small-town gymnasiums, packed bleachers and Indiana’s deep devotion to high school basketball helped give the film an authenticity that continues to resonate with audiences. For Hoosiers, the movie is more than a Hollywood sports drama—it is a tribute to a defining part of the state’s identity.
The anniversary screening offers longtime fans an opportunity to revisit the film in a theatrical setting while introducing a new generation to the story of the Hickory Huskers.
Tickets start at $25 and are available at TheCenterPresents.org/Hoosiers, by calling (317) 843-3800 or by visiting the Fifth Third Bank Box Office at the Payne & Mencias Palladium, 1 Carter Green in Carmel.
A limited number of $15 student tickets will be offered. Discounts are also available for military personnel, veterans and first responders.
The event is part of the JPMorganChase Spotlight Series and the 2026–2027 Center Presents Season sponsored by Allied Solutions.
