A new gothic ballet featuring all new, original music composed by Seager, and an expanded cast with an exciting collaboration of GHDT and The Indianapolis Ballet Professional Training Program dancers. The world premiere of “SALEM” features a new collaboration of Gregory Hancock and Sound Design by emerging artist, Seager. This all-new one act story ballet premieres an original score by
Seager and a storyline that not only acknowledges Salem, MA in its’ 400th Anniversary, but what could possibly lie in wait under dark dystopian, futuristic autumn skies. SALEM takes place in a gothic American future, where a rigid order watches every move and hunts the last embers of human connection. Where conformity is rewarded, and whispers of ‘bewitchment’ take the place of individuality and free thought, often leading to execution. In a world that is dominated by control; society has turned into a tightly monitored culture that rewards obedience, punishes individuality, encourages citizen informants, and isolates humans from nature, one another, and even their true selves.
Yet, small acts of resistance endure. One young woman has the courage to raise her head and stare domination in the face. Yet allegiances, and even love, can foster betrayal when consequences seem too dire. When all of the power, resources, and control lies in too few hands, can anyone ever, truly live? Salem is a cautionary tale of over-regulation and power unchecked, stocked with stark visuals and amazing dancing.
Also on the bill is the world premiere of “Ophelia“. Based on the doomed character from Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’. Ophelia takes the audience on a journey of madness and beauty that possesses this tragic character in a tour de force of stunning dance. This world premiere will pair the choreographic story-telling talents of Hancock and a haunting score by Composer, Cory Gabel.
Also, add the sumptuous return of “La Llorona“, a visually stunning and opulent work that explores the eerie Mexican folklore story of a doomed spirit; ‘The Weeping Woman’, who spends eternity wailing for her lost children after a fit of mad jealousy, rage, and impossible choices, ends their lives.
Rounding out the bill is “SALOME”; Hancock’s acclaimed piece on the beheading of John the Baptist and the psychological warfare and passions that occurred in one family leading to his demise.
An incomparable story-weaver, Hancock brings these tales to life with specially commissioned scores, incredible dancing, unforgettable stories, and lush costuming and theatrical visuals that only the creative team at GHDT can create. This will be an experience like no other! An evening of eerie tales where all of the pieces fit together to create the perfect topper to dark autumn nights.
