The Autumn Country
To celebrate the fifth anniversary of Festival 451indy, the grand opening of the Ray Bradbury Center’s new public spaces, and the 75th anniversary of The Illustrated Man, the Ray Bradbury Center presents an original theatrical work created especially for this milestone celebration. “The Autumn Country,” an original theatrical production commissioned by Festival 451indy and premiering at The District Theatre. Emmy Award-winning actor and playwright Bill Oberst Jr., Indianapolis-based playwright, composer, and performer Ben Asaykwee, and Ray Bradbury Center Director Dr. Jason Aukerman will collaborate to create an intimate new stage experience drawing on The Illustrated Man and Bradbury’s short fiction. The production brings Bradbury’s own words into conversation with music, adaptation, and original writing, using the illustrated body and the city as interconnected metaphors. With minimal staging and an actor-driven approach, the performance places language, voice, movement, and imagination at its center. Bradbury’s own words come alive through performance; his stories are reimagined through original music and dramatic adaptation; and newly commissioned poetry weaves the evening together. Created as a series of interconnected theatrical vignettes, the production embraces the intimacy of the black box: minimal staging, a handful of performers, and language powerful enough to conjure entire worlds.
